Personal Hygiene includes good dental hygiene: Essential while traveling abroad

Did you know that over 4 billion passengers flew in 2017 setting a new travel record? This is according to Eric Rosen of Forbes magazine on Sept 8,2018. 4 billion passengers

JAL flight plan
Once that statistic sinks in then, it’s easy to understand recent travel I took overseas where we spent over 24 hours including stops to arrive at our destination, and we received an overnight bag on each leg of our journey, 14.5 hour and 9.5 hour jaunts. I’ve never traveled this far and so it was a first time experience for me and my travel partner, my husband. It was exciting because of the destinations we were heading to and for my first experience with Business class air. Our first set of flights to Tokyo and eventually on to Bangkok was with Japan airlines (JAL) and they did not disappoint. I was very comfortable and well taken care of. After receiving this goodie bag of personal hygiene products I had to see what was included inside for our trip. Of course I had prepared my own items from home to accompany me along the way. I’m always prepared with floss and other interdental hygiene aids in addition to packing my electric toothbrush, which was in the overhead luggage bin.
We were warned before take-off that we would encounter some turbulence which meant we had to be prepared and remain unafraid. Our captain didn’t disappoint us as he was very informative, intuitive and calming. During the rough air our bags could be heard moving to and fro quite loudly above our heads and I was glad I had a comfortable seat and a friendly warm faced flight attendant. It didn’t last too long and we were back to cruising the frigid northern skies. Being very short and unable to pickup my bag, especially over my head I opted to leave my toothbrush and toothpaste in my bag and use what JAL provided. Fortunately, my mini dental floss was within my reach in my handbag. The airline provides a toothpick with a small piece of floss attached to the end of the toothpick during meal service. That piece of floss is really only good for a few teeth before it frays and breaks. My attendant provided one of those along with each meal which was an attempt at maintaining my dental hygiene but not sufficient for a full maintenance. There was a small supply of mouthwash in the restricted and small restrooms as well.
Dental floss has evolved and now comes in compact biodegradable containers and in all thicknesses, materials, and flavors. Amazon reviewers have given Dr Tungs Smart Floss a 4.7/5.
It’s surprising that the airlines will supply in addition to this bag of goodies, slippers, or socks and the other amenities for hygiene but exclude dental floss. I would like to ask the airlines to consider a change and add mini dental floss as an amenity for passengers. Consider offering it in the restroom for passengers to use as needed. It shouldn’t be too costly to provide especially when similar items are offered as a give away to patients when they visit their dentist.
