Venetian: The Language of Women Dentists

Venus The Goddess of Victory and Fertility

The “people” from Venus, as in the book“Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus” I refer to as Venetians. Some believe the more appropriate title might be Venusian or Venerian, which are derivatives of the root of their name and a proper reference to use. However, I reference the special characteristics of women and their abilities of fertility and the Goddess of victory depicted by Roman mythology, also an appropriate reference for women and the reason for today’s blogpost.

My colleague and I entered the room faced with an intimately appointed space with natural light from the floor to ceiling windows, the chatter of voices echoing all around, “sounds like a lot of women” I thought. Receiving the attendees behind a well-organized reception table, topped with name badges, chocolate favor-bags, rolls of raffle tickets and a ceramic cheetah print stiletto-wine-bottle-holder. “I need one of those” my friend said with a chuckle. The table flanked by vendors logos stretched along the perimeter with a nutritious breakfast buffet at the opposite end. A large adjacent room, with tables to seat roughly 90 women, “where the chatter is coming from”, I thought to myself.  Excited to see my friends, and colleagues, it’s been a tradition, connecting mentors, allies, fellows, students, residents and dentists who have newly joined the ranks of practice.  Although it may seem like any other dental or oral surgery seminar series I’ve attend, it certainly isn’t. It’s for women dentists and is noticeably different than the others. My friends are visible once I entered and we exchange embraces and a friendly peck on the cheek, all agreeing it’s been too long since we have seen each other but grateful for the moment.  Quick conversation about our lives and how we can reconnect again before the next organized dentistry event.  I peruse a run-down of my morning lecture topics; general anesthesia, pathology, human papilloma virus and Botox. All clinically relevant, and informative subjects.  Some fresh new faces and some good old friends, all of them women.  While sitting at the table eating waiting for the lecture portion to start, we were spectators of a scrubs fashion show by guess who? Women!
At the podium the chairwomen remained poised, with one at the mic opening the event. Speaking of its history and of the award recipient, this year another stellar leader and mentor. The room quieted as she read off her credentials, her voice slowed and cracked and her eyes welled up. Emotionally touched, we all were, the sound of sniffles audible, I found my tissues. At that moment I wasn’t self-conscious of showing my true feelings. I knew the recipient, deserving of this award. The Chairwoman composed her feelings but we all felt her admiration and respect. She was greeted with broad congratulations and claps as she accepted the award. Once she finished her acknowledgments she also spoke from her heart wearing it on her sleeve, like the event chairperson and attendees perched in front of her. Then it hit me, I realized we were all connected like a network. All unafraid of judgement from those around us to show emotion without reservation. We all spoke the same language, Venetian.
Recall from 1992 “Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus”, it exemplified the psychological differences between the sexes. There have been mixed reports as to whether there is a true difference and if so why.[1] Researchers breaking down behaviors into the emotional response versus regulation of the response and a combination of the two behaviors.[2] Obviously men, and women are all from the same human race, but does our displays of emotions make us different? I believe it does.

Tambora, Roa Malaka, near Bangkok in Thailand. Bank Museum Lobby.  Two of these young girls approached me and was able to get out the words "selfie with me".  After taking at least 7 selfies with several different phones and girls I asked to have my own photo of these beautiful examples of young women. I only wish I got their names, but I had to catch up with my group. 😙💗💙💚💛💜💞#MyVikingStory

Semarang, Java. These lovely women approached me to take a photo with me. I was happy to share with them.
