The Girldoc: Giving Thanks at Thanksgiving

The Girldoc: Giving Thanks at Thanksgiving:
Thanksgiving. It’s a holiday that gives us the opportunity to reflect on; the present moment, the past or on what’s to come. Reflection is an important step in clearing the mind and in cleansing the soul. It’s one of the first things we need to do in order to experience gratitude. I believe the ability to appreciate and understand gratitude, makes us better people. Recognizing the opportunities we have or acknowledging the situations of our life helps to achieve inner peace and understanding and hopefully happiness.
Recently while traveling to Thailand I was reminded of this while learning more about Buddhism and the philosophy behind this religion. Life’s struggles and the adversities that are put before us remind us that there are better times ahead. Discerning allow the mind to recognize and potentially quell feelings of anger and overcome emotional challenges we face in life. This reminds me of a silly but very true life’s lesson about how our minds can take our thoughts anywhere. Life is like an undulating waveform, sometimes it’s heading up and sometimes it’s heading down. Recognizing that life’s path is forever changing and accepting the road ahead is necessary in life’s journey and remaining content. Understanding that as humans we sometimes  experience feelings of loss or emptiness which are normal. That’s all we need to do is to acknowledge it when it occurs and not try to “fix” these feelings, because they are normal. Trying to repair something that isn’t broken doesn’t make much sense. The most important path is to recognize it and move on with life.

Knowing the Buddhist teachings allow us to overcome. I touched on understanding life and transcending our fears and interpretation of our “unabridged” self. Notice that we are the heritage of our our family and that we carry on the spirit of our ancestors and their DNA. Our parents before us will rest peacefully in their death and we will manage our sorrow and forge ahead because that is what we are made to do. It’s human nature to gravitate to others to help lift up the spirit through the mind.
Having self awareness and gratitude will start the journey forward.
