ARMISTICE
DAY
Today
is the hundredth anniversary of armistice day. A tribute to those who have
served and given the greatest gift of all, their self. Two of my most favorite veterans served our
country with honor. My dad, John Luis
Pollick was granted a five year deferment due to his acceptance into a steam-fitters apprenticeship, however he changed his mind and enlisted because his two friends did the same and served in the Korean War, (AFKN) Armed Forces Korean network as a SP4 and his title was the "Jeep Sargent". He spent several months in Fort Monmonth, NJ in boot camp and spent two christmases away from home, landing in Korea on Christmas Eve. My father-in-law, Joseph John Gisondi, Sr. was drafted
into WWII. The reality of that fact, knowing that they both went into harm’s
way knowing that they could be hurt, mortally wounded or die in the process,
but they did it willingly and with gusto.
THEIR SERVICE
While
in Korea, 1957-1959, my dad used his musical talents, as a musician playing tenor saxophone, drums, piano and clarinet and with Hollywood mogul Gary Marshall started a quartet. He served his time and luckily returned home
to my mother where they began a family. Although my father was a veteran he
never took advantage of any of the benefits afforded to veterans up to the day
he died. He was a very humble and proud man.
My
father-in-law, who was very much the same and who recently passed away at 98,
was an airplane mechanic in World War II. He had never in his life operated on
airplane engines but he could fix an engine like nobody’s business and they
quickly recruited him to repair the engines.
Both
wonderful men incredible fathers’ grandfathers and great-grandfathers. I miss
them both.
